The Better Energy Homes scheme provides grants to homeowners who want to make their homes more energy efficient. Key updates as of October 2026:
• Heat pump system grant: up to €14,500 (apartments €11,500; air-to-air €9,500). This bundle is made up of up to €10,500 for the heat pump unit, up to €2,000 for central heating upgrade works (radiators/underfloor heating) where needed, and a €2,000 Boiler Scrappage Grant when an oil, gas, solid fuel or electric storage heating system is removed.
• NEW from 6 October 2026: €600 home battery grant, and the solar PV and solar thermal grants now open to homes built and occupied before 2025 (previously before 2021).
• Solar PV grant: up to €1,800.
• Attic insulation: up to €2,000 for detached houses.
• Cavity wall insulation: up to €1,800 for detached houses.
• Replacement windows grant (€1,500–€4,000 by dwelling type) and external doors grant (€800 per door, max 2 doors / €1,600).
• First-time buyers of homes purchased on/after 1 Jan 2025 can get an enhanced attic insulation grant (up to €2,500) even without a full retrofit.
• Gas and oil boiler replacements are NOT funded under any SEAI scheme.
Works must be carried out by a registered SEAI contractor and you need grant approval before starting. Budget 2027 allocated a record €654.5 million to SEAI residential and community energy upgrade schemes for 2027.
Must own the home (landlords, companies and holiday home owners can also apply for most grants). Heat pump and boiler scrappage: built and occupied before 2021. Solar PV, solar thermal and battery: built and occupied before 2025. Insulation and heating controls: built and occupied before 2011.
