Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability

Means-tested grant of up to €40,000 for major adaptations to make your home suitable for a person with a disability — extensions, ground-floor bedrooms, accessible bathrooms and more.

📋
Full Details

The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability helps with the cost of works needed to make a home more suitable for the needs of a member of the household with a disability. The maximum grant is €40,000 (increased from €30,000 in 2024) or 100% of the approved cost of the works, whichever is less.

Typical works include extensions, a ground-floor bedroom or bathroom, widening doors, ramps and other structural adaptations. The grant is means-tested: the full grant is available to households with gross income up to €37,500, tapering as income rises, and no grant is payable above a household income of €75,000. Your local authority can arrange an occupational therapist assessment if needed.

Budget 2027 includes a further allocation to housing adaptation grants. Funding is provided by local authorities and some councils have paused or limited new applications, so check your county. Do not start works before you have grant approval.
